Monolith AI software wins ‘Crash Test Innovation of the Year’

  • Monolith artificial intelligence (AI) software achieved the coveted accolade following a meticulous assessment from the highly experienced judging panel

  • The panel of engineering experts, research specialists, and technology writers rewarded Monolith for its innovative work with the BMW Group, which has employed the company’s AI software platform to enhance the efficiency of its crash testing procedures and dramatically accelerate vehicle development

  • The BMW Group engineers used Monolith to create self-learning models powered by valuable existing crash data, helping to accurately and swiftly predict the impact of multiple crash scenarios on passengers

  • Monolith AI software enabled the BMW Group to reduce the amount of time- and cost-consuming physical testing, while optimising crash performance earlier in the vehicle design process and improving product performance

22 November 2022, London, UK, – Monolith, artificial intelligence (AI) software provider to the world’s leading automotive, aerospace and industrial engineering teams, has been honoured in the 2022 edition of the prestigious Automotive Testing Technology International Awards, achieving the ‘Crash Test Innovation of the Year’ award for its work with the BMW Group.

Meticulously assessed by an esteemed judging panel of engineering experts, research specialists, and technology writers, Monolith earned top recognition for its intelligent AI platform’s highly successful application in the BMW Group’s crash testing programme – lowering the engineering teams’ testing time and improving product performance and safety.

The panel of judges commented: “Monolith’s innovative AI tool impresses because it enables manufacturers to derive deeper learning in less time, underpinned by their own historic data. Its work with the BMW Group has enabled engineers to efficiently address complex safety challenges much earlier in development. This has enabled a much richer analysis of solutions, which will benefit future programmes.”

Engineering teams at the BMW Group sought to change a time-intensive, costly approach to crash testing, specifically focusing on procedures and criterion measuring passenger leg injuries, known as the tibia index. The BMW Group’s engineering personnel leveraged the power of Monolith software machine learning capabilities to build self-learning models, utilising their wealth of existing crash data to accurately and swiftly predict forces exerted on the tibia during a range of different crash types. This game-changing approach not only reduced the need for physical testing but also enabled the BMW Group’s engineers to optimise crash performance earlier in the vehicle design process.

Dr. Richard Ahlfeld, CEO and Founder, Monolith, said: “The power of artificial intelligence lies in its ability to facilitate smarter, more efficient workflows, which enable businesses to effect positive change faster. The whole team at Monolith is honoured to have had our work with the BMW Group recognised with this prestigious award from Automotive Testing Technology International, and it’s a fitting testament to the incredible potential that exciting AI innovation holds for taking vehicle development to new heights.”

The BMW Group engineers are not alone in seeing the value of introducing AI into their workflows. According to a 2022 Forrester report*, 84% of technical decision-makers see significant opportunities with AI and believe they must implement machine learning to maintain a competitive advantage in their industry. Indeed, Monolith AI software is already trusted by the world’s top engineering teams in automotive, aerospace and industrial markets from Siemens and Honeywell to BMW and BAE.

Organised by the magazine since 2006, the Automotive Testing Technology International Awards have established a strong reputation for rigorously analysing and spotlighting the efforts of individuals and companies that have made - and are poised to make - a difference in the world of vehicle development.
